She Is Nowhere

"In The Glare of An Accustomed Flower" (2008) by Jeffrey Harp

“In The Glare of An Accustomed Flower” (2008) by Jeffrey Harp.

She carries around her shadow like a
lost breath.
Her arms are tucked behind
her neck and her teeth grow backwards.
If you ask her nurse where she is,
he will say, “Nowhere,” and read his paper with a yawn
floating over his head, while a woman, this woman
without a name, without a fingerprint, wears a
new face every time she knocks on your door,
curving lips and twisting arms
for food.
